After an embarrassing defeat, Green Bay Packers’ coach Vince Lombardi once told his team it was time to get back to the basics. Holding a football before them, he simply said, “Gentlemen, this is a football.”
At the beginning of Lent the liturgy reminds us that now is the time to get back to basics. In Leviticus the Lord gives Moses a list of the basic commandments: Don’t steal. Don’t lie. Don’t bear hatred in your hearts for one another. The Golden Rule is reiterated: do to others what you would want them to do to you. Nothing is more basic than that.
Today’s Gospel is Matthew’s parable of the Last Judgment. Jesus makes things even more basic by telling us that whatever we do or don’t do to the least of our brothers and sisters, we do or don’t do to him. We show our love for God in the way we love the least ones among us: by feeding, quenching, clothing, welcoming, comforting, and visiting them.
Our best Lenten resolutions are in these basic reminders from the commandments and from Jesus himself. Lent invites us to get back to the basics.

Tras una embarazosa derrota, el entrenador de los Green Bay Packers, Vince Lombardi, le dijo una vez a su equipo que había llegado la hora de volver a lo básico. Con el equipo de fútbol americano delante, simplemente dijo: “Caballeros, esto es un balón de fútbol”.
Al comienzo de la Cuaresma, la liturgia nos recuerda que es el momento de volver a lo básico. En Levítico, el Señor le dio a Moisés una lista de los mandamientos básicos: no robarás, no matarás, no mentirás, no albergarás odio en tu corazón hacia otras personas. La Regla de Oro se reitera: haz a los demás lo que te gustaría que te hicieran a ti. Nada es más básico que eso.
El Evangelio de hoy es la parábola de Mateo del Juicio Final. Aquí, Jesús hace que las cosas sean todavía más básicas diciéndonos que, lo que hagamos o no hagamos al más necesitado de nuestros hermanos y hermanas, se lo hagamos o no se lo hagamos a él. Demostramos nuestro amor por Dios por nuestra manera de amar a los más necesitados entre nosotros: alimentándolos, vistiéndolos, reconfortándolos, y visitándolos.
Nuestros mejores propósitos de Cuaresma se encuentran en los recordatorios básicos de los mandamientos y en el propio Jesús. La Cuaresma nos invita a volver a lo básico.
