The rich man in today’s Gospel (Luke 16) did not help Lazarus. When Lazarus died, he went to heaven. But the rich man went to a place of torment which we understand as hell. The rich man then asks God to send Lazarus to comfort him. God says that between Lazarus and the rich man there is a barrier that cannot be crossed.
Today Jeremiah says this: “I, the Lord, alone probe the mind and test the heart, to reward everyone according to his ways, according to the merit of his deeds” (17:10). That line between rich and poor—between those who have too much and those who have almost nothing—can be crossed now, while we live in this world.
The rich man could have crossed it, saying: “Lazarus, good morning. Oh, my heavens! How did this happen to you? Please let me help you! Let me show you the love our loving God asks us to show one another!”
Lent is a time when we remember Jesus’s love for us. Lent invites us not just to cross the barriers between rich and poor but to eliminate them, cost us what it may.

El rico epulón no ayudó a Lázaro. Lázaro murió y fue al cielo. El rico epulón murió y se fue al lugar del tormento cosa que entendemos como el infierno. El rico epulón le pide a Dios a que le envíe Lázaro para consolarlo. Pero Dios le dice que entre el rico epulón y Lázaro había una barrera que nadie podía cruzar.
Hoy nos dice el profeta Jeremías: “Yo, el Señor, sondeo la mente y penetro el corazón, para dar a cada uno según sus acciones, según el fruto de sus obras”. Esa barrera entre ricos y pobres, entre los que tienen demasiado cosas y los que ni tienen lo necesario para vivir, esa barrera la Podemos cruzar mientras vivimos en la tierra.
El rico epulón la podía haber cruzado si él hubiera dicho: “Lázaro, buen día! ¡Dios mió, Lázaro! ¿Cómo te pasó esto? Por favor, déjame ayudarte. Permíteme enseñarte ese amor que nuestro querido Dios nos pide compartir los unos con los otros”.
La Cuaresma es tiempo cuando recordamos lo mucho que Jesús nos ama. La Cuaresma nos invita no solo a cruzar las barreras entre ricos y pobres sino a eliminarlas, sin importar cuánto nos cueste.
