Father Stephen Vanyo, C.Ss.R. passed away on June 5, 2024 at the age of 88. He was born in Annapolis, Maryland, on September 13, 1935. He made his first profession of religious vows as a Redemptorist of the Baltimore Province on August 2, 1957. He was ordained a priest on June 17, 1962.
As a young priest, Father Vanyo went on Mission to Brazil where he excelled for decades in his work with youth, with the Redemptorist laity, and in the building of churches.
His first work was in the parish which today is the State Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, in Campo Grande. Throughout his mission in Brazil he also worked in Tibagi, Ponta Porã, Aquidauana, Santo Antonio Parish in Campo Grande, Perpetuo Socorro Sanctuary in Curitiba, and Casa Santo Clemente in Curitiba. For six months he was pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Curitiba.
In 2011 Father Vanyo became the Chaplain of the Sisters of the Copious Redemption. Then before his death, he was residing at the General House of the Sisters of the Copious Redemption, Mary Mother of Divine Grace, located in Ponta Grossa. He did important work with the sisters and was esteemed by all of them.
His funeral, pictured below, was held in the Sanctuary of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Curitiba, PR, Brazil on Friday, June 6 and he was buried in the Redemptorist plot in the Cemetery Parque Iguaçu.
