Tuesday of Holy Week/Martes de la Semana Santa

“Love your enemies.”

Jesus is deeply troubled the night before His death. Reclining at table with His closest disciples, He tells them that one of them is about to betray Him. The beloved disciple leans against Jesus’ chest and asks Him to reveal the betrayer’s identity. Jesus does so, but in a way that conceals Judas’ intentions from the rest of the disciples. He takes a morsel of bread, dips it in a dish, gives it to Judas, and tells him to do quickly what he is going to do.

Jesus nourishes His betrayer with bread. He who teaches others to love their enemies stands behind His words. He loves Judas, the one who will betray Him; as He loves Peter, the one who will deny Him; as He loves the beloved disciple, the one who will follow Him to the foot of the Cross.
