St. Patrick’s in Baltimore closed indefinitely due to earthquake damage

Rattled nerves and a few stray bits of plaster were, for the most part, the only damage suffered by Redemptorist communities and churches in the Baltimore Province during Tuesday’s rare earthquake that was felt up and down the U.S. East Coast.

But St. Patrick’s Parish in the Fells Point section of Baltimore wasn’t so lucky. The church, which had been a mission of the now-closed St. Michael’s and is now under the care of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, is closed indefinitely due to serious damage to the steeple and bell tower. Large pieces of the steeple came crashing to the sidewalk during the quake, and the building has been ruled unsafe. A community already trying to adjust to being part of a new parish is now temporarily without its church home.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore will provide shuttle buses to Sacred Heart of Jesus for parishioners who normally attend the Wednesday evening and Sunday morning Masses at St. Patrick’s. You can read more about the damage and plans to help the parishioners here.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for us!
