Lenten reflection, day 6

God rescues the just from their distressThe major theme of today’s Mass is found in the responsorial psalm: “From all their distress, God rescues the just.”

The psalmist invites us to join him in glorifying God as he recalls the many ways God has saved and delivered him from the upsets of life. Without hesitation, he assures us that when we cry out to God, He hears and rescues us.

Today’s readings offer two avenues of rescue available to God’s people: Scripture and prayer.

In Isaiah 55, God assures us that the effectiveness of His Word—the Scriptures—may be likened to the effectiveness of the rain and snow He sends to the earth to restore and nourish it.

In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us our deliverance lies in prayer and instructs us in the attitudes we should bring to our prayer. As Father, God gives us the bread that strengthens and “saves those crushed in spirit.”
