Fr. Joseph Oppitz, well-known Redemptorist scholar, dies at age 85

Father Joseph Oppitz, a well-regarded Redemptorist scholar, died October 6 at the St. John Neumann Residence at Stella Maris in Timonium, MD. He was 85 and had dementia.

He was born August 12, 1926 and professed his first vows as a Redemptorist on August 2, 1948. He was ordained to the priesthood June 21, 1953. Father Oppitz was also a survivor of the sinking of the Andrea Doria in 1956.

A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on October 11 at Stella Maris. A funeral Mass will immediately follow in the main chapel. Burial will take place in the Redemptorist cemetery at St. Mary’s Church in Annapolis, MD.
