Fr. James Small dies at age 85

Fr. James Small died January 28 at the St. John Neumann Residence at Stella Maris in Timonium, MD. He was 85.

A viewing will be held February 1 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, 320 Church Ave., Ephrata, PA 17522.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated February 2 at 11 a.m. at Our Mother of Perpetual Help.

Burial will follow immediately at St. Clement’s Cemetery.

Fr. Small was born June 8, 1927 in Boston. He professed vows as a Redemptorist August 2, 1949, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 20, 1954. He spent almost 30 years as a missionary in Brazil. He returned to the United States in 1985 and in 1986 was assigned to St. Martin of Tours Parish in Bethpage, NY. He moved to Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church/St. Clement’s Mission House in Ephrata, PA in 2000 where he served until 2012 when his health required his reassignment to the St. John Neumann Residence.
