Lent, day 10: St. Clement Mary Hofbauer, C.Ss.R.

1 Corinthians 3:6-11; Psalm 117; Luke 10:1-9

Clement was born in Tasswitz, Moravia, in 1751. By the age of 16 his father had died as well as seven of his 11 siblings, so Clement worked in the fields to help his mother. Later he became a baker. But in addition he pursued an education to help him become a priest.

He also spent time as a hermit to deepen his relationship with God and made yearly pilgrimages to Rome. On one of these journeys, in 1784, with his friend Thaddeus Hubble, he sought out a young missionary congregation, the Redemptorists. He was soon ordained a priest and sent north to Poland to expand the congregation beyond Italy, where it had been established by St. Alphonsus in 1732. From there, the Redemptorists spread out to Europe and the whole world.

There are two things notable about the life of St. Clement. The first was his determination to fulfill his mission, no matter what. The second was his conviction that to do this, he needed the help of the laity. So he formed groups that he called Circles and later Oblates, which today we call Redemptorist Lay Missionaries. We thank him for this inheritance: his missionary zeal and vision.

Clemente nació en Tasswitz, Moravia, en 1751. Cuando tenía 16 años, su padre y siete de sus 11 hermanos habían muerto, así que Clemente trabajaba en los campos para ayudar a su madre. Más tarde se hizo panadero.

Pero además, siguió una educación para llegar a convertirse en sacerdote. También pasaba el tiempo como ermitaño para profundizar en su relación con Dios y hacía peregrinaciones anuales a Roma.

En uno de sus viajes, en 1784, con su amigo Thaddeus Hubble, buscó una joven congregación misionera, los Redentoristas. Pronto fue ordenado sacerdote y enviado al norte a Polonia, para llevar a la congregación más allá de Italia, donde había sido establecida por San Alfonso en 1732. Desde allí, los Redentoristas se extendieron por Europa y todo el mundo.

Hay dos cosas notables sobre la vida de San Clemente. El primero fue su determinación de cumplir su misión, sin importar qué. La segunda fue su convicción de que, para hacerlo, necesitaba la ayuda de los laicos. Por eso formó grupos que llamó Círculos y más tarde Oblatos, que hoy en día conocemos como Misioneros Laicos Redentoristas. Le damos las gracias por su herencia: su visión y su fervor misionero.
