From Redemptorist Superior General:

To the Provincial of the Province of Vietnam:
"We admire the commitment of the Province of Vietnam, and your own personal commitment, to support all efforts for justice and peace, especially for those in Vietnam who suffer from violence, from injustice, and from the efforts of those in the communist regime who do abuse or ignore human rights. We have read the articles published about the recent attacks on the Redemptorist house in Hanoi. We pray that true justice will prevail and that the rights of all confreres and parishioners will be fully respected.
-Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R.
Superior General

For more on the situation, here’s a report from our Vietnamese confreres and you can keep up with further developments at

There’s no "Christmas creep" here at!

We hope you’ll join us again this year beginning November 23 for our annual Advent retreat. Each Wednesday we’ll post a new reflection on the coming Sunday’s Gospel reading. Our meditations this year are written by our four newly   professed Redemptorists!

Also during Advent, check in with us on Mondays for short video stories from several Redemptorists. Meet some of our confreres, hear their vocation stories and tales from their missions, and listen to them tell you, in their own words, how God has blessed them in their vocation.

After a little more than a year of waiting, the vice postulators for the sainthood cause of Blessed Francis Seelos received word recently that Vatican experts have declined to consider the cure of a Maryland woman as the second miracle needed for Seelos’ canonization.

While the review panel agreed that Mary Ellen Heibel’s sudden cure from metastatic esophageal cancer in January 2005 was extraordinary, the group hesitated to confirm it as miraculous because less than 10 years had passed since the cancer disappeared, and Mary Ellen Heibel passed away in October 2009.

Read the full statement here.

The Redemptorists remain grateful to the Heibel family for their assistance, we pray for the repose of the soul of Mary Ellen, and we continue to pray that one day our confrere will be recognized as a saint.

Blessed Francis Seelos, pray for us!

Perfect for small group discussions, RCIA classes, and individuals seeking to better prepare for Sunday Mass, Living the Word: Scripture Reflections and Commentaries for Sundays and Holy Days (November 27, 2011 through November 25, 2012), provides commentary, reflection and discussion questions for the readings for 2012.
The book is co-written by Redemptorist Father James Wallace and Sr. Dianne Bergant, CSA. Living the Word is published by World Library Publications and may be ordered online at or by calling 800-566-6150.
Father Wallace is a professor of homiletics at Washington Theological Union in Washington, D.C. He professed vows as a Redemptorist in 1964, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1970

Happy “birthday” to all Redemptorists and our collaborators around the world!

Today is the 279th anniversary of the founding of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. St. Alphonsus Liguori’s dream became a reality on this day in 1732 when he and a handful of followers first began to live and work toward one goal: preaching the good news of God’s plentiful redemption to all, especially to the poor and most abandoned.

Since then, St. Alphonsus’ spiritual sons have multiplied and spread throughout the world. We’re now 5,300 strong serving in 76 countries!

We thank God for the blessings of these last 279 years and ask the intercession of Our Mother of Perpetual Help as we continue following in the footsteps of Our Redeemer.

Prayer for Vocations to the Redemptorist Family

Provident God,
you spoke your dream of plentiful redemption
in Jesus Christ.
Your Spirit ignited the heart of St. Alphonsus,
inspiring him to found a family in the Church
dedicated to proclaiming the good news
of plentiful redemption to the most abandoned.
Raise up among us
strong women and men of faith,
afire with love for you
and zeal for the mission of proclaiming your word
among those who do not know you,
or who need to hear your word proclaimed anew.
Guide men to respond with generosity
as vowed Redemptorist priests and brothers,
and women and men to serve in joy and hope
as partners in the Redemptorist mission.
We ask this in the name of Jesus,
your Word, who is our Life.
