Praying with Redemptorist Saints

St. Alphonsus Liguori

St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori

One Thing Necessary
(adapted from St. Alphonsus' prayers)

O my God, help me to remember that time is short, eternity long.
What good is all the greatness of this world at the hour of death?
To love you, my God, and save my soul is the one thing necessary.

Without you, there is no peace of mind or soul.
My God, I need fear only sin and nothing else in this life, for to lose you, my God, is to lose all.
O my God, help me to remember that I came into this world with nothing, and shall take nothing from it when I die.
To gain you, I must leave all.
But in loving you, I already have all good things — the infinite riches of Christ and His Church in life,
Mary's motherly protection and perpetual help, and the eternal dwelling place Jesus has prepared for me.
Eternal Father, Jesus has promised that whatever we ask in His Name will be granted us.
In His Name, I pray: give me a burning faith, a joyful hope, a holy love for you.
Grant me perseverance in doing your will and never let me be separated from you.
My God and my All, make me a saint. Amen.

An Arthritic's Prayer to St. Alphonsus

St. Alphonsus, you are the special patron of all who suffer from arthritis and the pains of many years. When our fingers twist with pain, keep us focused on the hands of Christ pierced with nails. When our knees throb with endless aches, allow us to see the knees of Jesus smashing to the street under the heavy cross. When our backs stiffen with soreness, let us remember the back of Christ thrown across the rough wood of the cross. When our hips, elbows, knuckles, and other joints hurt so much that tears well up in our eyes, help us to recall the tears, the sweat, and the blood that flowed from our crucified Jesus, who suffered so much more for each of us.

St. Alphonsus, you were afflicted with curvature of the spine and confined to a wheelchair in your final years. Teach us to unite all our pains with the sufferings of Jesus. By your intercession, may our pain be eased — but even more, may we be one with Jesus in his death and resurrection for the redemption of the world. Amen.

St. Clement Hofbauer

St. Clement Hofbauer

Gracious God, our God of care and compassion for humanity, you filled St. Clement Mary Hofbauer with a special zeal for the well-being of people, especially those who are poor or troubled in spirit. In St. Clement you revealed the richness of your loving kindness and mercy.

Through his intercession, help us to remain true to the Catholic faith, which he so nobly taught. Let us walk in the path that St. Clement marked out by his own life. Hear and answer us, God, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. John Neumann

St. John Neumann

God of the Journey, through the intercession of St. John Neumann, patron of immigrants, we pray for those who leave their homelands longing for freedom and new opportunities.

May they recognize you as their traveling companion and find a welcome awaiting them.

We make this prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.

O Jesus, who on earth commanded and practiced a hidden life, grant that in these our days of pride and outward display the example of your servant John Neumann may lead us to follow your humble ways. Grant, O Lord, that like your holy bishop we may do all our work with the pure intention of pleasing you, and let not our deeds be done to win the favor of others but to give glory to our Father in heaven.
We thank you that our fellow citizen and devoted missionary bishop is recognized among the saints of your Church in heaven, and we beseech you, O Lord, to glorify him on earth by granting the favors we ask through his intercession. Amen.

St. Gerard Majella

St. Gerard Majella

For Motherhood:
O good St. Gerard, powerful intercessor before the throne of God, wonder-worker of our day, I call upon you and seek your help. While on earth, you always fulfilled God's designs; help me, too, always do God's holy will. Beseech the master of life, from whom all parenthood proceeds, to bless me with offspring, that I may raise up children to God in this life and heirs to the kingdom of God's glory in the life to come. Amen.

For Mother with Child:
O almighty and everlasting God, through the Holy Spirit, you prepared the body and soul of the glorious virgin Mary to be a worthy dwelling place of your divine Son. Through the same Holy Spirit, you sanctified St. John the Baptist, while still in his mother's womb. Hear the prayers of your humble servant who implores you, through the intercession of St. Gerard, to protect me amid the dangers of childbearing and to watch over the child with which you blessed me. May this child be cleansed by the saving water of baptism and, after a Christian life on earth, may we, both mother and child, attain everlasting bliss in heaven. Amen.

Blessed Francis X. Seelos

Blessed Francis X. Seelos

O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer, let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight.

I offer praise to You for the grace You have bestowed on Your humble missionary, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos.

May I have the same joyful vigor that Fr. Seelos possessed during his earthly life to love You deeply and live faithfully Your gospel.

Divine Physician,

You infused Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos with the gift of Your healing.

By the help of his prayers, sustain in me the grace to know Your will and the strength to overcome my afflictions.

For love of You, make me whole.

May I learn from the example of Blessed Seelos and gain comfort from his patient endurance.

Bountiful God, in Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos You have given Your people a model for those who labor joyfully in Your earthly kingdom.

May the smile of Fr. Seelos in Your heavenly dominion dwell on those who find life burdensome.

Help Father Seelos to keep continually before the eyes of Your people the gentleness of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer.

Amen
