Tony Russo

Announcing the publication of a new book, In Silent Prayer A History of Ministry with the Deaf Community in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, by Father Anthony Russo, C.Ss.R., who has devoted himself to the deaf community for over forty years. In Silent Prayer traces the history of this special ministry in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Through insightful text, as well as historical documents and photographs, Father Russo not only tells the story of the great men and women who have provided this important service, but also looks forward to the coming years and considers how this service can be further shaped and improved. Specific examples of how to establish an effective ministry are included along with a discussion of the ideas and attitudes necessary to effect change and progress in ministry today.

Tony Russo

Father Anthony Russo, C.Ss.R., grew up in Clifton, New Jersey, and has experienced some degree of hearing difficulty throughout his life. In 1955, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, along with a commission in the US Army. Ordained by Cardinal Spellman of New York in 1965, Father Russo was sent in 1967 to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, where he has dedicated his life to working with and for the deaf.

AUGUST 5, 2008
Strong in faith, rejoicing in hope, burning with charity, on fire with zeal, in humility of heart and persevering in prayer, Redemptorists as apostolic men and genuine disciples of Saint Alphonsus follow Christ the Redeemer with hearts full of joy; denying themselves and always ready to undertake what is demanding, they share in the mystery of Christ and proclaim it in Gospel simplicity of life and language, that they may bring to people plentiful redemption.
– Constitution 20

Moving Day!

Today across the Baltimore Province, a geographic area that covers the eastern United States, many Redemptorists are assuming new assignments for the next three years. It is a time of tearful good-byes and joyful welcomes, a time of dying and rising in Christ, as each Redemptorist enters into a new phase of his public ministry and personal journey. Please remember them and their faith communities in your prayers during this time of transition.

The V. Rev. Patrick Woods, C.Ss.R., Provincial Superior, presented Brother Stephen Lendvay, C.Ss.R., with an Our Lady of Perpetual Help tapestry to commemorate his 24 years of dedicated work as the Director of the Perpetual Help Center, Bronx, NY. Through Brother Steve’s ministry of "making her known," mission kits have been sent all over the world, and countless people have come to know Mary under this wonderful title. Engraved in the bronze plaque attached to the tapestry were the words:

"Mary said, ’Do whatever he says.’"
– John 2:5

The Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province will meet in its XIV Provincial Chapter January 21 – January 30, 2008. A Chapter is a representative governing body of the entire Province membership. It meets every three years to elect its leadership Council, to review its ministries of the past three years, and to set policies and to plan for the future. Seventy-four men will serve as Delegates for this Chapter.

Around the world the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) organizes its 5,875 priests and brothers by Provinces – groups of communities within geographical units. As the Baltimore Province begins its Chapter, other provinces may be finishing or anticipating theirs; every province within the Congregation from Scotland to Australia holds its Chapter within the same six-month timeframe.

This is a milestone moment within the apostolic life of the Province and the Congregation. Please remember the Redemptorists, especially the Chapter delegates, in your prayers:

"Holy Spirit, pour out your abundant blessings on the Redemptorists as they meet in their Provincial Chapter."
